Saint-Andre far from happy with French performance

New France boss Philippe Saint-Andre says he is seeking perfection from his Les Bleus side and criticised their overall performance in the RBS 6 Nations defeat of Italy.

Despite having just six days training with his new troops and running in four tries to put memories of last year’s humbling 22-21 defeat in Rome to bed, the France coach felt his team should have been more ruthless.

The former Toulon coach was particularly unimpressed with replacement scrum-half Morgan Parra’s decision to kick into touch and end the game as they chased a fifth try.

“As a coach, you seek perfection but the glass is half full and half empty,” he said.

“We lacked aggressiveness at the start of match in clearing out and as for taking the game to them, we did some things of quality but we were often guilty of failing to finish them off well.

“I wasn't happy about the last action. We saw a situation where we kicked the ball into touch.

“You must play the ball, enjoy it. The match was won, sure, but you mustn't kick the ball into touch. The pleasure of playing must carry on until the final second.”

Saint-Andre’s men will certainly face a tougher test next week when they welcome Ireland to the Stade de France.

And Saint-Andre made it clear that he expects the set-piece will need to be much better if they are to maintain their early momentum.

“On the plus side, we scored four tries, we were disciplined and we did not concede any try,” he added.

“We were very, very good in the scrum at some moments. We won two of them when they had the put-in, but at some other moments, our scrum was slightly below average.

“We won two scrums against the head, including one that led to Malzieu's try, so we can't say the scrum was irregular as such. On our lineout, however, we lost a lot of ball.

“It's good to win but there is a lot of room for improvement.”
